This Little Piggy…

…fell off a transport truck.

He was rescued by a motorist who saw it happen. The piggy was then taken to the Farm Sanctuary (the New York location), where they learned that in addition to the cuts and scapes he sustained from falling out of the truck, “he was also sick with pneumonia and loaded with parasites. He was having trouble eating solid foods too, and as a result, was underweight and smaller than he should be at his age.”

They named him Bob Harper piglet.

The farm sanctuary site describes this little cutie as a “charming and playful boy”. As well as “keeping us on our toes with some sort of antics, Bob is continually making us laugh by crazily spinning around his hospital stall and shaking his blankets with his mouth like a puppy with a chew toy!” [source]

Did you know :

☀ Mother pigs sing to their piglets while they are nursing.

☀ Pigs dream.

☀ Pigs have a good sense of direction, and can find their way home from long distances.

☀ They learn from watching one another. [source]

Also, “pigs are social, playful, protective animals who bond with each other, make nests, relax in the sun, and cool off in the mud. Pigs are known to dream, recognize their own names, learn “tricks” like sitting for a treat, and lead social lives of a complexity previously observed only in primates. Many pigs even sleep in ‘pig piles,’ much like dogs. Some love to cuddle and others prefer space.” [source]

This Holiday Season, I’m going to donate to the Farm Sanctuary where animals like Bob Harper piglet get rescued and taken care of, for life.

Until next time…

  1. Oi, this just completely depressed me. And now I am hating myself for having a barbacoa pork burrito tonight. The fact about their mothers singing to their piglets just kills me 😦

Thanks for sharing, this may have been the nail in the coffin for me to stop eating pork.
